NCW takes cognisance of Amity girl�s death

SHILLONG, April 29 � Taking suo-moto cognisance of Dana Silva M Sangma�s death at Gurgaon last Tuesday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said it would investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the student at Amity University.

Chairperson of the NCW Wansuk Syiem, said over phone that the members of the Commission and Supreme Court advocates visited the University on Friday and recorded statements of the authority and students who were witness to the incident before the student took her life.

Dana, niece of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, was reprimanded by one of the invigilators during the examinations for allegedly cheating. She later took her life at her hostel room. She was studying MBA at the University.

The Chief Minister termed the death as a case of discrimination against students from the North East. The family members of the 21-year-old student filed an FIR under SC/ST Act, apart from a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC against the University authorities. The police lodged the case under Section 3 of the (SC/ST) Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 and the matter is being investigated.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Achik Youth Association (DAYA) would be holding a condolence service in memory of Dana. The Association condemning the incident alleged that the University was covering up the matter.
