NB Bhandari put behind bars

GANGTOK, Aug 11 � Former Chief Minister of Sikkim, and President of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC), Nar Bahadur Bhandari surrendered at the district court on Wednesday. High Court of Sikkim had pronounced a jail sentence of one month to former Chief Minister Bhandari in a corruption case pertaining to offences arising for works of Rural Water Supply (RWS) schemes under the Rural Development Department of the State government during 1983-84, filed by the CBI.

During the judgment on Tuesday, the High court of Sikkim had ordered Bhandari to surrender in court on Augus 10, 2011. In compliance to the court order, he surrendered on Wednesday in district court.

Speaking to the media, Bhandari said that during his tenure he had supplied enough water to rural areas because people were facing water crisis. He decided to supply drinking water to rural people and he got success in the process.

After surrender, police took him to the Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital for a check up. But due to health problems, he was admitted in the STNM hospital on Wednesday and after treatment, he was taken to the Rongey Jail.

The CBI had registered a case against 17 persons, including Bhandari in 1984 on the recommendation of the then State government headed by the Chief Minister BB Gooroong that the accused person had abused their positions as public servants to award contract works of the rural development department to their favourite contractors.
