Nat�l Science Day observed at Dergaon, Doomdooma

DERGAON, March 8 - National Science Day (NSD) was observed with great enthusiasm under the aegis of Dergaon branch of Assam Science Society (ASS) in collaboration with DKD College Science Society recently.

The programme started with the welcome address by the secretary of Dergaon branch ASS Dr Monoj Kumar Sarma. The meet was chaired by the president of Dergaon unit of ASS, Dr Choudhury Nath Saikia.

Explaining the significance of the day, Dr Saikia said that the discovery of Raman Effect by Professor CV Raman was a pathfinder in Physics. He urged the gathering to learn more about CV Raman.

A lecture on �Present Status and Prospect of Organic Farming in Assam� was delivered by Dr Minuawara Begum, Associate Professor of Botany in relation with the focal theme of the National Science Day, 2019 � �Science for the People and People for Science�.

As a part of the programme, a speech competition on environment was held among the students. A total of 15 groups took part in the speech competition on environmental conservation through power-point presentations.

The group of History Department comprising Priyanka Senapati, Priyakhi Saikia and Champak Dutta was declared as the best group, while the group of the Chemistry Department with Monoswinee Rajkhowa, Tenisha Hazarika and Ramyata Priyam Bora secured the second position and the group of Assamese Department comprising Anali Sarma, Protikha Baruah and Prity Kalita was declared as the third best group respectively.

The programme was also attended by the executive president of Dergaon branch of ASS Dr Manoj Jyoti Hazarika.

The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Monoj Kumar Sarma.

Our Correspondent from Doomdooma adds: Digboi branch of Assam Science Society in association with Digboi College and Students� Science Club of Digboi College organised a day-long programme on the occasion of National Science Day at the Digboi College premises recently.

The programme started with the paying of floral tributes to Sir CV Raman followed by a speech by the principal of the college Dr Dip Saikia on the central theme of National Science Day, 2019 � �Science for the People and the People for Science.�

The programme consisted of a lucid presentation given by students of Digboi College on Sir CV Raman and his contributions to various fields as well as on the central theme. The presentations were followed by an extempore speech competition organised by Digboi College Students� Science Club in which Joyita Bhattacharjee of Zoology Department, Samsher Limboo of Physics Department and Sumit Das of Botany Department secured first, second and third positions respectively. Aqif Sulleman, secretary of the Students� Science Club anchored the extempore speech programme and also offered the vote of thanks.
