Nationwide campaign in support of Sharmila

IMPHAL, Feb 5 � The National Alliance for People�s Movement (NAPM) will launch a week-long nation-wide campaign to support Irom Chanu Sharmila�s 12- year-long struggle against the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958.

NAPM Coordinator Faisal Khan, who has not been permitted to meet Sharmila for the fifth time in one and half year, while speaking to media here today said that the nation-wide campaign will start on March 8, the International Women�s Day and will continue till the birthday of Sharmila on March 14.

He added that about 24 activists including Sandeep Pandey and Zulaikha Jaber will join the protest to show solidarity with Sharmila�s struggle.

Faisal who had travelled all the way from Jammu & Kashmir to meet Sharmila, met a women group which is staging a relay hunger strike since December 13, 2004, to save Sharmila. He also staged a sit-in demonstration here.

The human rights activist from Manipur has been on a hunger strike since November 4, 2000 to have the Act, which provides unlimited powers to security forces to shoot at sight and arrest anybody without a warrant.
