Guwahati, March 23: The Union Cabinet has given a green signal to release prisoners who have been languishing in jail for petty crimes.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court had taken up the issue of decongesting jails last year due to Covid-19 and instructed states to release those who were behind bars for minor offences.

As per reports, the Cabinet will now direct the States to carry out the procedure for the release of the prisoners.

Preference will be given to those above 60 years and those who have been languishing in jail due to their inability to pay the penalty imposed on them even after having served the sentence.

Notably, those who are in prison for murder, rape or other serious offences will not be considered under this scheme.
