Guwahati, Oct 25: A panel on social sciences constituted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recommended replacing the name India with “Bharat" in school textbooks, the committee's chairperson CI Isaac was reported as saying on October 25.

"The committee has unanimously recommended that the name 'Bharat' should be used in textbooks for students across classes. We have also recommended introducing 'classical history' instead of 'ancient history' in the textbooks," Isaac told said.

He further added that the committee has also recommended highlighting "Hindu victories" in various battles in the textbooks.

The change in NCERT books comes a little after the country witnessed a debate that began in September after the Union government used “President of Bharat” instead of “President of India” in the invites sent out for G20 dinner hosted at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, NCERT also initiated the final phase of developing new textbooks by establishing a 19-member committee responsible for aligning “school syllabus, textbooks, teaching and learning materials” with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for Classes 3-12.
