Guwahati, March 12: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to do away with the mandatory PhD requirement for experts thereby enabling them to teach in central universities.

As per media reports, the body's Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar informed that the move was aimed at roping in industry experts and professionals who have a lot of experience but could not teach in universities given the current rules under which there is no provision for colleges and universities to employ industry experts, who don't have a PhD or a NET qualification.

As per reports, the UGC is also planning to create special positions for the experts that are likely to be Professors of Practice and Associate Professor of Practice.

Experts who have crossed the age of 60 may join as full or part-time faculty till they turn 65, said reports.

A committee will be constituted to look into the details and official announcements will be made soon.
