National Voters� Day today

GUWAHATI, Jan 24 � Along with the rest of the nation, the first National Voters� Day is being celebrated in Assam and would be celebrated as such in the State every year, right from the grassroots levels of the polling stations, the subdivisions and districts and at the State level. The State level function is being organised at Rabindra Bhawan here from 11.00 am tomorrow, an official release said.

The Chief Secretary of Assam, Naba Kumar Das will be the chief guest of the function while the keynote address on the topic, �Voters� participation and strengthening democracy� will be delivered by Harekrishna Deka , former DGP of Assam.

The basic objective of the National Voters� Day is to honour the voters, felicitate the newly enrolled young voters, make the eligible citizens aware of their right to enrol as voters and encourage the registered voters at every level to fearlessly and diligently exercise their right of franchise. It is aimed at achieving 100% enrolment so as to ensure maximum voters� participation in the elections. Already a baseline survey of knowledge, attitude, behaviour and practices of electors in Assam is in the process of being conducted.

Apart from the street plays in various locations of Guwahati by the artistes of the Department of Information and Public Relations, rallies, debate, essay competition and panel discussion on Doordarshan have already been organised as a part of the National Voters� Day celebration in Assam, the release added.
