GUWAHATI, Feb 10 � The 71st edition of the Oil India Limited (OIL) Senior National and Inter-State Table Tennis Championship got off to a colourful start at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium, in the RG Baruah Sports Complex here today.
OIL CMD NM Borah formally inaugurated the championship in the opening ceremony, where State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State table tennis body president and State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, Indian Table Tennis Federation (TTFI) president Ajoy Singh Chautala, secretary general Dhanraj Choudhury, OIL officials Utpal Bora and Ashok Anand were also present.
The Indian men�s and women�s teams, which emerged champions in the recently concluded SAF Games at Dhaka, were felicitated on the occasion by the Assam Table Tennis Association. Defending champions Sarath Kamal and K Samini were also honoured in the function.
International table tennis players from Assam like Nandini Baruah, Monalisa Baruah, Meena Bora, Modalasa Hazarika, Arunjyoti Baruah, Rahul Dutta and others carried out a march past.
Altogether 34 men�s and 27 women�s teams are participating in the championship. The team championship will be completed on February 13, while the open finals have been scheduled for February 16.
The meet is being organised by ATTA in association with The Assam Tribune.
