National medicos body condemns Dr Duttas killing

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 9 - The National Medicos Organization (NMO), Assam, has condemned the fatal attack on Teok Tea Estate (TE) Senior Medical Officer Dr Deven Dutta, who served the tea community for the past four decades. He was a very well known personality among the locals of Jogduwar, Teok.

In a press release here today, the NMO said that it is very sad and anguishing that the 73-year-old physician, who was serving in Teok TE even after his retirement dedicatedly, for the welfare of the tea garden workers, was fatally assaulted on August 31 last by the same people, whom he was serving for decades. Attacks on doctors and other health workers has become almost a common phenomenon in the nation these days, and, in Assam, it has probably touched the extreme today.

To prevent such kinds of heinous incidents in the coming days, an NMO, Assam delegation met States Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently with some suggestions.

The suggestions include, exemplary punishment to all those involved in heinous attacks on the physicians and other health workers, strict implementation of the Assam Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institution (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, sensitization of common people about the legislation through print and electronic media, early implementation of Central Protection Act by the Central government, strengthening of manpower in 24x7 hospitals and conversion of single doctor hospitals to only outdoor service hospitals, and forestalling of condemnatory remarks by the media and other influential personalities.

The Health Minister assured the delegates of NMO Assam that he would go through the suggestions and necessary study would be done by the authority concerned on the matter, added the NMO, Assam press release.
