National Librarian�s Day observed

DERGAON, Aug 12 - The National Librarian�s Day was observed with a daylong programme under the aegis of the Golaghat District Library Association (GDLA) at the Furkating College today. The programme started with the flag hoisting by the college principal, Dr Apurba Kumar Saikia. This was followed by smriti tarpan initiated by the vice principal, Dr Torali Gogoi, and moderated by the librarian of the college, Gayatri Baruah.

Later, an open meeting was held under GDLA president Khogeswar Bora. The objectives of the meeting were stated by the secretary of the GDLA, Dr Gyandeep Saikia. In the meeting, the significance of the National Librarian�s Day, which is celebrated throughout the country on the occasion of the birthday of Dr SR Ranganathan, the father of Library Science in India, was stated by Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika, a research scholar of the Gauhati University.

Taking part in the programme as the resource person, Dr Pranab Kumar Baruah, Scientific Officer-in-Charge of the Library of the North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), delivered a speech on �Globalisation, book selection and reading habit.� He highlighted different issues of libraries in the ICT context.

The executive president of the Assam College Librarians� Association, Srimanta Madhav Bora, underlined the need of a Library Service Act in the State. Later, in the executive meeting, a new committee of the GDLA was formed with Khogeswar Bora as the president, Jitendra Bora as the executive president, Nitumoni Phukan as the general secretary, Bimal Pathak, Bhaskar Khanikar and Gayatri Baruah as the joint secretaries, Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika as the publication secretary, Dr Jnandeep Saikia as the treasurer and seven other members.

The meeting adopted several resolutions along with a demand to the State Government to appoint librarians in high and higher secondary schools.
