SHILLONG, Nov 19 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that the National Games in 2022 would be a �massive transformative event�, and would impact the State positively in developing the sports scenario as well as the economy. Meghalaya is scheduled to host the National Games 2022.
Speaking at the Meghalaya National Games Outreach Summit held here, Sangma said: �The National Games will not only develop the sports culture, but open up opportunities for trade, entrepreneurship, tourism, besides developing urban infrastructure and connectivity.�
The State Government has been holding parleys with the Centre to get funds and develop the sports infrastructure for the Games. The Union Ministry of Social Welfare has already earmarked a sum of Rs 350 crore for the construction of a stadium in the State with facilities for the differently abled.
The State Government is leaving no stone unturned to hold the National Games in a grand way, which will also coincide with Meghalaya�s 50th year of statehood. Sangma said construction works of all stadiums for the Games would begin shortly, starting with the upgrade of the PA Sangma Stadium at Tura and other sports facilities in the State.
Highlighting the talent of the youths of the region in the sporting arena, Sangma said, �Meghalaya and the North East in general have produced excellent sportspersons. Without much support or infrastructure, people of the region have excelled in different sports which reflect the passion and talent of the people.�
The Chief Minister said efforts are on to nurture this talent, and today�s summit was aimed at achieving the goal by bringing all stakeholders together. On the State�s sports policy, he pointed out that it has become mandatory for schools to have physical training teachers.
Sangma said schools and colleges in the State have good sports infrastructure and added that it is very important to recognise the role of sports associations and the contributions of sportspersons who bring laurels to the State.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said the Government is working hard to ensure that the sports infrastructure for the National Games is put into place on time.
