National Commission for Women visits Nagaland

DIMAPUR, June 10 - National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma and counselor Neha Mahajan held a discussion on the political rights and political empowerment of women in Nagaland with State Governor PB Acharya at Raj Bhavan in Kohima on Saturday. They were accompanied by Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) chairperson Dr Temsula Ao and other members of the State unit.

According to a Raj Bhavan release on Sunday, the NCW chairperson also shared her ideas with the Governor on how local body elections could be more inclusive in terms of gender.

The release said the Governor suggested many novel ideas to empower women of the State and he also extended his support to NSCW. The Governor and Sharma also deliberated on the Central Government�s various schemes for women and its implementation in the State.

Sharma said NCW plans to hold a meeting in the coming months with the North East State Commissions for Women, in Nagaland to chalk out new programmes to empower women of the region.

The two-member NCW arrived in the State on June 8. The NCW officials visited Dimapur district jail and interacted with the female inmates. They also held a meeting with police officials headed by DG (Prisons) Renchamo P Kikon and deliberated on the challenges of the women prisoners and also women police personnel.
