SADIYA, Sept 8 Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh today said he would submit a proposal for renaming the Dibrugarh Airport and Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Assam after legendary music maestro Bhupen Hazarika, reports PTI.

Attending the central function here at his birth place Sadiya to observe Hazarikas 86th birthday, Ramesh said he would submit a proposal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for renaming the airport after Hazarika.

The minister would also submit another proposal to the Prime Minister for naming after the singer-lyricist the 9.8 km Dhola-Sadia bridge over river Brahmaputra, touted to be the longest bridge in the country.

Speaking at the function organised by the Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Cultural Trust, Ramesh recalled Congress had wanted the Dada Saheb Phalke Awardee to contest parliamentary elections in 2003 as a Congress candidate but he had instead decided in favour of BJP before being approached by Congress.

Asked why he chose BJP, Ramesh remembered being told by the Bard of the Brahmaputra that he liked the partys former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayees

poems.

The Union Minister distributed solar lanterns among the 1700 families in the 26 sq km Amarpur island, near Sadiya in Tinsukia district, where there is no electricity or road connectivity and where erosion continues unabated.
