NALBARI, Nov 16 - The Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari district Purabi Konwar on Saturday formally launched the harvesting and selling of pumpkins at a progressive farmer�s farm at Maju Siral village of Nalbari district.
A brief meeting was held on this occasion, in which the Deputy Commissioner lauded the efforts of the farmer, Safikur Rahman, for his bumper production of tasty pumpkins.
She said that the agriculture department and the agriculture development centre in the district have been extending all types of support to the farmers of Nalbari district to achieve, in particular, bumper production of pumpkins.
The DC assured all kinds of help to the farmers in marketing their products. She said the road from the embankment to the farmer�s field, which has been in a dilapidated condition, will be reconstructed soon to make it convenient for the marketers to easily transport the pumpkins.
Homeswar Mazumdar, a specialist associated with the Nalbari Krishi Vikas Kendra, told this correspondent that about 500 farmers of the district have been producing pumpkins and the Kendra is extending technical support to Safikur Rahman, too, in augmenting his cultivation.
It may be mentioned that Rahman has been cultivating pumpkins in an area of 40 bighas on the bank of the Pagladia river. On the first day itself, he sold around 50 quintals of pumpkin at a rate of Rs 2,500 per quintal.
