Nagarik Samaj call to avoid communal violence

GUWAHATI, June 14 - Condemning the mob lynching incident in Karbi Anglong, the Asom Nagarik Samaj today said it is the responsibility of both the administration and society to ensure that such superstition-related violence cannot divide people on communal lines.

In a statement issued to the media, the organisation�s president Harekrishna Deka and working president Ajit Bhuyan among others, appealed to the people to maintain restraint and foil any malicious design to spread communal violence in the State.

�We demand a thorough probe so that all the culprits get exemplary punishment. However, it is also important to bring awareness against superstition in society,� the statement said.

Expressing concern at the spurt in cases of mob violence, the Asom Nagarik Samaj further said it is important to analyse why such violence and intolerance is affecting the mindset of the people.

�Child lifting, witch-hunting and similar incidents need a careful handling both by the police and the media so that these cannot fuel tension among different communities of the society,� it added.

Meanwhile, Lawyers Association, Guwahati organised a prayer meet today offering its condolences to the families of the two Karbi Anglong mob lynching victims Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath.

A peace rally was organised at Jyoti Chitrabon on Wednesday evening. People of Kahilipara along with Axl Hazarika, Assamese experimental artiste and technical head of Jyoti Chitraban Digital Archive paid their tribute to Nilotpal and Abhijeet.

The rally taken out from Ganeshguri, passed through the main road of Kahilipara. Finally, the people gathered at Jyoti Chitraban and lit earthen lamps and candles for eternal peace of the departed souls.
