NAGAON, Jan 19 - Vehicular traffic in Nagaon town is presently in a state of total chaos allegedly due to the failure of Nagaon traffic police.
Among various reasons cited by those at the receiving end, poor road condition and unprofessional management by the newly-appointed incharge of Nagaon Traffic Branch has been cited as possible reasons.
As per allegations levelled by some local organisations, the entire Traffic Branch of Nagaon Police instead of controlling the burgeoning traffic on the arterial roads, are on the contrary busy in imposing penalties, collecting some form of cess or fine from occasional violators of traffic rules.
According to Utpal Boruah, joint secretary of the central committee of Krishak Shramik Unnayan Parishad and Amlan Jyoti Mahanta, district secretary of a farmers� organisation, due to poor management by the traffic incharge of Nagaon Traffic Branch, free flow of vehicles on the roads within the town is stymied even though many roads have been adequately widened by the government as well as the Nagaon Municipal Board.
Boruah and Mahanta further reiterated during a recent interaction with this Correspondent that local MLA Rupak Sarma and Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain were trying their level best to solve the perennial traffic problem and therefore widened the main road dissecting the town from Bebejia towards Uriagaon bypass Chariali.
But due to alleged negligence by the Nagaon Traffic Branch, besides poor management, traffic congestion has remained more or less unsolved or lingered on even after various roads of the town have been considerably improved, or new traffic diversions introduced.
It is occasionally seen that the traffic police personnel are busy clamping wheel locks on errant vehicles and summoning the drivers/owners to the branch office for clearance of penalties, rather than disposing off the case on the spot. As a result, vehicles parked along narrow roads at non-parking sites often create problem for other drivers.
They wondered why the traffic police personnel did not impose fine on the spot. Expecting streamlined traffic in the days ahead, the duo therefore urged the district authority concerned to take appropriate measures to improve the quality of service of the traffic police personnel in the greater interest of the tax-paying public.
