Nagaon Police arrests one prime accused

NAGAON, Sept 16 - Nagaon Police arrested a prime accused on Sunday in the statewide multi-crore rupee scam of minority students� scholarship scheme, sponsored by the union government. This person along with other people across the State had siphoned off a major share of the allocated fund under the scheme in the district as well as in the State through some hundreds of fake bank accounts.

Shankarbrata Raimedhi, the Superintendent of Police, Nagaon addressing a press conference today at his office said that following an investigation in a case registered at Juria police station, Nagaon Police arrested one Shahjahan Ali from Suneribara village under Juria PS on Sunday and recovered a handbook, a special file, a huge list of beneficiary students with various bank accounts numbers from his possession.

Raimedhi however claimed that almost all accounts were opened through various CSPs of the district as well as the State. Police also raided the rented houses of two other persons who were allegedly directly involved in the scam but they managed to escape. During the raid, police seized a special file of the scheme where some hundreds of beneficiaries along with their bank accounts were enrolled by the gang of fraudsters, he said adding further that in the beneficiary list, names of beneficiaries from several districts of the State had been found and because of that the issue ironically the entire State.

Referring to the arrest of Shahjahan Ali as a breakthrough, Raimedhi further stated that it was just the outcome of a preliminary investigation and further investigation would be carried out. He said that he would send all details to the higher authority for further investigation in other districts.
