Nagaland situation: All leave cancelled, DCs told to stay put

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, Oct 21 - Amid fear of breakdown of the law and order situation in Nagaland following deadlock in the Naga talks over the Naga flag and constitution, the state government on Monday directed all Deputy Commissioners and administrative officers to remain within their places of posting and jurisdiction till further orders.

A WT message issued by the Nagaland Chief Secretarys office directed that in case of extreme exigency, written permission of the Chief Secretary must be obtained through the Commissioner of Nagaland, before leaving station. All Deputy Commissioners have been asked to ensure that this instruction is communicated to all administrative officers in their district through WT message only.

The WT message said that any administrative officer not available in their station and not on medical or maternity leave already sanctioned should be recalled. It asked all DCs to confirm receipt of the message and action taken through return WT message.

The Nagaland Police headquarters also directed all unit commanders to recall all officers and personnel on leave, except those on medical leave. This is for strict compliance, a WT message issued by the Nagaland DGPs office said.

However, in view of certain misinformation being circulated on social media on an impending large-scale security operation in Dimapur district, police clarified that no such security exercise has been sanctioned. In a release, Dimapur police asked people to desist from circulating such fake news. The release said it was a criminal offence to spread such concocted news with the mischievous intent to instil insecurity among the public.

At a consultative meeting with primary stakeholders of the Naga society in Kohima on October 18, Governor RN Ravi, who is also the Centres interlocutor for peace talks, said the NSCN-IM has adopted a procrastinating attitude to delay the Naga settlement raising the contentious symbolic issues of a separate Naga national flag and constitution, on which it was fully aware of the Government of India's position.
