DIMAPUR, Feb 15 - Nagaland Police has appealed to the public to be vigilant against lottery scams, saying that these are advance-fee fraud which begin with an unexpected email notification, phone call or text message (SMS) that you have won a large sum of money.
Stating that a lot of such cases are being investigated, SP (Crime) M Tungoe, in a release, today said it is very difficult to recover the money the gullible public already paid in order to claim the prize. He appealed to the public to mandatorily note that unless someone buys a ticket, one cannot win a lottery prize. All genuine lotteries will subtract any fees, tax, bank charges, courier charges, etc., from the prize and no advance fee is ever asked for or paid, he stated.
The police has urged the public not to respond in any way to claim/receive such prizes and further requested to share and disseminate such information in any platform in the interest of the general public.
