Nagaland meet to discuss land use

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, Sept 30 The Nagaland Government is holding a consultative meet to discuss issues that are of importance for the people of the State.

The meet, scheduled for October 8, will include civil societies, tribal hohos, woman groups, stakeholders, policy makers and public leaders.

State Chief Secretary Lathara said in a communiqu that the main issue to be discussed pertains to land and its use. As the State embarks on the path of rapid development, it is important that the society resolves the divergent interest of the landowners and those of the public at large, he said, adding that a related issue to be discussed is the need of regulating the continuing private interest even after the land is taken over by the government for public purpose.

Other major area in focus would be elections to the urban local bodies and reservation of women in urban local bodies.

Election to urban local bodies being a relatively recent phenomenon, it said the legal and institutional framework for constitution, continuation and dissolution of the elected local bodies needs to be harmonised with the constitutional provisions. Similarly, a consensus needs to be evolved on reservation for women in these local bodies in the light of mandatory constitutional provisions for women reservation in urban local bodies, it informed.

The government said it felt the need to call the consultative meet to make a sincere effort to evolve a broad consensus on all these issues.
