Nagaland honours Everester

DIMAPUR, June 22 � Major (Dr) Neikhrietuonuo Liny�, who scaled the Mt Everest on May 25 along with the Indian Army Women Everest Expedition 2012 team, was felicitated last evening at Durbar Hall here for being the first Naga to climb the peak.

Major Linyu, a trained medical doctor and an adventurer, set a national record along with others by summiting Everest in the shortest possible time despite the unfavourable and unpredictable weather pattern that forced as many as 200 other climbers to return from their base camps and also left six people dead and four climbers missing during the period.

Major Liny� told young students, including scouts and guides and NCC, that the Indian Army Women team of seven that made it to the top show how much one can achieve if one has the determination, team spirit and sense of purpose. Encouraging them, she said, �It is you who have to develop interest, build on your strength, have pride and dignity of labour; it is you who have to fight your way with whatever resources and whatever information you have.�

Stating that their uniform itself commands respect, she said �If you try, you are also going to get to the top of whatever you do.�

Expressing deep happiness at her achievement, Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar said, �You deserve our heartiest congratulations and felicitation,� adding, �Seeing you here amidst us inspires us.� He further said, �You have made us all very proud and we are proud that somebody from Nagaland has done this.�

Stating that she has displayed a spirit of adventure, dedication and fearlessness, he said these are qualities that all of us have to imbibe. Describing her as a role model, the Governor urged the young students to resolve to outdo her with the spirit of doing something out of the ordinary, and to set their goals and achieve them. �Aim high�, he said.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also extended warm and heartiest congratulations on behalf of the people of Nagaland for her outstanding achievement and said, �She makes the nation proud, the army proud and particularly the Nagas proud.�
