DIMAPUR, Nov 20 - Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang has asserted that there is no question of compromising on 33 per cent reservation for women in civic body elections in the State unless the petitioner agrees with it. The Naga Mothers Association has filed a petition in the Supreme Court on the women reservation issue in the State.
The State Cabinet accordingly decided to agree with the reservation of women, Zeliang said while addressing a consultative meeting on Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 and Amendment Act in Kohima recently. The meeting was held to discuss 33 per cent reservation for women in civic body elections in Nagaland and taxation on land and buildings in Kohima.
Convened by Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang, the meeting saw attendance of members of Nagaland Assembly, Chief Secretary and Tribal Hohos.
In regard to taxation, Zeliang said, the government will determine the rate of the taxes according to the Act and the municipal bodies will collect it.
On women reservation, he stated that a series of meetings were held with Naga Mothers Association and other women organisations but they have decided to wait for the verdict of the court. Therefore, on this issue the State Cabinet has already decided to go by the existing provisions of Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 as amended in 2006, he informed.
Naga Hoho, ENPO, Ao Senden, APO, Konyak Union, Chakhesang Union, Lotha Union and Rengma Union were present in the meeting and gave their views on why the 33 per cent women reservation is not required in Naga society.
