Naga MLA urges elderly to share ideas with young

KOHIMA, Oct 5 � Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary for Horticulture Kejong Chang has called upon the elderly to help youngsters follow good moral behaviour.

�The older people should set examples for our grandchildren to lead a good moral life so that the society can change for the better,� Chang said in his address as the chief guest during the State-level observation of International Day of Older Persons here recently.

Chang, the 90-year old legislator, maintained as grandparents and elderly people of the society they should share ideas and experiences with the young and also encourage them to do physical exercise and maintain healthy eating habits.

Educationist Achilla Imlong Erdican and Khumtsa Wotsa received the State Older Persons Award for their extraordinary contributions towards the uplift of the Naga society.

Speaking on the occasion, president of Nagaland Senior Citizen�s Forum (NSCF), Dr S I Tushi Ao urged the State Government to upgrade the number of old age pensioners and timely and regular disbursement of the Annapurna Scheme.

He also suggested enactment of Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizen Act and setting up of a tribunal to look into the grievances of older persons.

The NSCF also urged the government to set up Geriatric ward in all district hospitals with trained doctors and nurses and appealed for granting travel subsidy and reserved seats for older persons in the State-owned transport system. � PTI
