GUWAHATI, Oct 16 � Two persons was arrested, including a Naamghoria (who leads the community prayer in the naamghar), along with one of his associate on charges of beating up a 51-year-old veteran national-level athlete after branding her as a �witch� in Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district.
The incident took place under Dokmoka Police Station on Wednesday when Radha Laskar, the Naamghoria instigated the people of the locality to beat up Debojoni Bora, the national-level athlete and a resident of the area.
Superintendent of Police of Karbi Anglong MJ Mahanta told this reporter that the arrests were made after examining the matter in its entirety.
�The Naamghoria persuaded the gathering against the veteran athlete during a customary ritual in the locality. The injuries are not of serious nature and necessary steps have been taken,� Mahanta said.
The veteran athlete was branded by the Naamghoria as the reason behind the recurring ailments in the village, which led to the situation, the SP added.
The other arrested person has been identified as Iswar Medhi. Debojoni Bora has represented the State in a number of national-level competitions.
