Mysterious calls create suspicion

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 3 - Many people in Guwahati today received calls from peculiar numbers and without any response from the other end, creating suspicion among the residents of the capital city.

Most of the numbers had the prefix +915. They were followed by three small alphabetical letters. One Jayanta Goswami of Chandmari received a call from the number +915cbc in his Airtel number. When I pressed the answer key, there was no response from the other side, he said.

Another person said that the callers number was not registered in the call history after he failed to respond to the call. Subscribers of different mobile service providers reported such calls.

This correspondent spoke to at least a dozen people who had received similar calls during the day.

An Army official said that staff at the Narengi cantonment also got calls from similar numbers. Some of our officers also got such calls. We are verifying what it is, Army spokesman Lt Col Suneet Newton said.

DCP (Central) Ranjan Bhuyan said that no one has approached the police so far, but we will look into it.

An engineer, who deals in cyber crime, also did not ruled out the possibility of an attack by a hackers gang.

Such gangs target one place at a time. That is why so many people got such calls in a day. They conceal their identity. They can even manipulate the STD code by using different servers. They could be in India or abroad. If the recipient receives the call and keeps it in hold for some time, there is a possibility that the hackers can encrypt the phone data, he said, asking the people not to respond to such calls.
