My son was murdered, says Kohlis mother

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, Aug 28 Suspecting that her son had been murdered and had not committed suicide, mother of Shaurya Chakra winner Captain Sumit Kohli, today, met Defence Minister AK Antony and demanded a CBI probe into his death.

Sumit (26), who won the gallantry medal for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, was found dead with gunshot wounds at his room in military residential facility in Lolab in north Kashmir in April 2006 while he was serving in 16 Rashtriya Rifles.

Sumit, who was on the last day of his posting in Lolab, was a brave officer and could never have committed suicide, his mother Veena Kohli told reporters after meeting Antony.

His family alleged that he was murdered because he knew who were behind the killing of four porters in a fake encounter in Lolab in Kashmir in April 2004.

In August 2005, the Army had ordered a probe into the allegation that its personnel killed four natives of a border hamlet in Jammu in a fake encounter claiming them to be militants to get gallantry awards.
