Musicians from Kolkata enthral Jorhat audience

JORHAT, Jan 4 - Internationally acclaimed musicians from Kolkata - Sudokshina Manna Chatterjee (vocal) and Subrata Manna (tabla) - enthralled the audience with their scintillating performances at a musical programme held on December 28 at the Sri Sri Pitambardev Goswami Memorial Auditorium here.

The programme, named �Indian Classical Music and Dance Evening� was organised by the Nandan Bezbaruah Smriti Rakshya Samiti of Jorhat on the concluding day of the six-day (December 23 to 28) 11th music workshop on tabla and vocal organised by the said Samiti at Sangeet Bharati, Malow Ali here.

Altogether, 45 local vocal artistes and tabla players attended the workshop held under the guidance of the two renowned musicians under the guidance of Sudokshina Manna Chatterjee and Subrata Manna.

The participants of the workshop also performed in the musical function. Dipty Sharma, president of Nandan Bezbaruah Smriti Rakshya Samiti too joined the noted musicians by a sitar recital. Kaushik Konwar joined the two well-known musicians on tabla.

A Bharat Natyam performance by well-known danseuse Ranjeeta Bordoloi and her disciples was another attraction of the evening.

Manavi Sarma, who anchored the programme, at the outset presented a brief introduction of Late Nandan Bezbaruah, who was a well-known cricketer. Bezbaruah, who played in Ranji Trophy matches from Assam, was also secretary of Assam Cricket Association.

Earlier, Jorhat Development Authority chairman Prasanta Goswami inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp in front of the photograph of Bezbaruah.

The perfomance started with a song rendered by Indrani Borkotoky. Noted sports organisers Dr Tapan Dutta, who is a retired AAU professor and Noni Dutta, a retired teacher of Sankardev Seminary here, were among the guests who attended the function.

The vote of thanks was subsequently offered by Dipty Sarma. She said that the Samiti has been organising the workshop for the past 10 years to enable the local vocal artistes and tabla players to upgrade their skills.
