Murders, kidnappings on the rise in Barak Valley

BADARPUR, Dec 7 � Sensation prevails in the entire Barak Valley following incidents of kidnappings and killing of innocent people.

On Monday evening at about 6.30 pm, a 10-year school student of Silchar Collegiate School, Sahadat Hussain Mazumdar was kidnapped from his Berenga residence under Silchar police station and later at night his body was recovered from the house of Dulu Roy at Silchar 1st Link Road, Lane No 9.

After coming to know of the incident, thousands of people came out on the streets and burnt down five hotels including that of Roy and ransacked many shops and residences in protest against the killing of the student.

Police immediately swung into action to nab the killers who fled to Badarpur town. Later with the help of local people and Badarpur police, the killer who was hiding in a commercial building at ST Road was arrested by Silchar police.

Earlier, on Sunday unidentified miscreants kidnapped Dr B Bhusan Nath, an eminent child specialist of Silchar Medical College from his own car while he was returning to Hailakandi from Silchar. Protesting the kidnapping, public ghaeroad the Deputy Commissioner�s office and police station and submitted a memorandum. Schools and colleges were boycotted, streets were blocked and processions taken out at various places.

It may be mentioned that a few days ago, Naaj, a student of Karimganj College was kidnapped. Pokhraj Jain, a young and popular businessman of Badarpur who was also kidnapped was later found dead.

People alleged that the law-and-order situation in Karimganj, Badarpur, Silchar, Hailakandi, Katigorah and in several other areas of Barak Valley is deteriorating.

Our Hailakandi correspondent adds : Dr Bidyut Nath, who was kidnapped on Sunday from North Narayanpur village of Hailakandi district returned safely on Tuesday night. Hemanta Bhattacharjee, SP, Hailakandi added that Dr Nath was found in an abandoned place at Morichbond in Algapur circle of the district. After his release, he was sent to his Silchar residence with police escort after medical test.
