Murder of youth opposing illicit liquor triggers big protest

JORHAT, Sept 17 - The murder of a youth reportedly by a bootlegger for opposing Illicit liquor trade at Rai Bahadur Lane locality in the heart of the town on Monday night triggered a massive protest today with a large number of people including women coming out on the streets to protest against the killing.

The mob went on a rampage and destroyed several food kiosks which allegedly sold illicit liquor in the locality.

A police source stated Ashish Bora, a youth of Rai Bahadur Lane, who has been opposing Illicit liquor business vociferously, was fatally stabbed and hit on his head allegedly by Nayanjyoti Das, the son of the owner of the outlet that allegedly sold illicit liquor in the garb of running a wholesale vegetable business in the area.

According to eye witnesses, Ashish who has been opposing the Illicit liquor trade since past few days and had even complained to police too, was attacked by Nayanjyoti following an altercation.

Ashish, who was taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, succumbed to his injuries after sometime.

Police last night had picked up Nayanjyoti�s father Atul Das from Green Park area under Garmur outskirts here. He was arrested today after locals enraged by the death of Ashish came out on the streets to protest against the murder.

Police had a tough time in controlling the protesters as residents from nearby localities too joined the protest.

Officer-in-Charge of the Jorhat Police Station Ranjit Chetia said that a police team led by him this evening apprehended Nayanjyoti from Pulibor outskirts here and both son and father have been arrested under Sections 302 and 120-B of the IPC.

Chetia said that drives against Illicit liquor was going on a regular basis in areas under Jorhat Police Station and the shop in question was found closed by police teams several times when for gone.

Meanwhile, the Jorhat district administration by deputing an executive magistrate has the sealed the said shop owned by Das.
