Munin Barua memorial meet held

GUWAHATI, May 7 - Munin Barua, one of the prominent filmmakers of Assam, was fondly remembered by his friends, associates and several other distinguished personalities associated with the cinema and theatre world of Assam in a tribute-paying programme organized today on the bank of Dighalipukhuri by the All Guwahati Students� Union and Chalachitra Samaj, Assam.

Rich tributes were paid to one of the most successful film directors of Assam, who left for his heavenly abode on April 7. Wife Manjula Barua and daughter Puja Barua started the programme that was attended by a number of prominent figures of the Assamese cultural world, including filmmakers, writers, journalists, students and theatre activists, among others.

Reminiscing about his association with Late Barua, filmmaker Sanjeeb Hazarika said Barua was very particular about the presentation of his work and understood the pulse of the masses. �During our days in a theatre group, I remember him rewriting a particular dialogue for three days to get that perfection required for the scene. As a friend, he was a great inspiration and support. I was with him during his last moments, but still cannot believe he is not among us today,� he said.

Noted actress Moloya Goswami said she always nurtured a desire to work with a director like Barua and it eventually got fulfilled. �It�s every actor�s wish to work with their favourite directors. I�m fortunate that I got the opportunity,� she said.

Recalling the time spent in cine artiste Amulya Kakati�s Friends Enterprise, music director Bhupen Uzir remembered how during one of the addas at the same place with Amulya Kakati and Munin Barua, the responsibility of doing the music for the film Pita Putra was entrusted on him.

Author Gautam Prasad Barua suggested that a biography of Munin Barua must be written so that the coming generations could know about his endeavours to save and uplift the Assamese cinema.

AASU advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya also paid tribute to Barua and remembered his contributions to the cultural world of the State. A number of other prominent personalities also spoke on the occasion. Later, over a thousand earthen lamps illuminated the banks of Dighalipukhuri as a mark of tribute to the departed soul.
