GUWAHATI, June 9 - The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will set up 330 water taps in and around the Kamakhya Temple in the service of devotees who are expected to throng the temple during the upcoming Ambubachi Mela.

The GMC is responsible for ensuring water supply, adequate lighting, proper cleanliness of the camps and the temple premises, and for sufficient manpower for cleaning works, etc.

The Public Health Engineering department will provide drinking water in plastic pouches during the Mela which will take place from June 22 to 26.

GMC commissioner Debeswar Malakar said that to ensure proper cleanliness, 58 workers will be on duty along with 10 supervisors. Manpower crisis in carrying out cleaning work is a serious issue for the GMC during the Ambubachi Mela. So this time, we will appoint one supervisor against 10 workers to strictly look after their activities. During the Mela days, our workers will work in three shifts, Malakar said.

From Saturday, the GMC started work for setting up pipes to supply water in the temple premises. It will also increase the number of garbage carriers in the area.

We will increase the numbers of dustbins and streetlights in and around the Kamakhya temple. All work will be completed by June 18, and from June 19, the service will start, he added.

During the Ambubachi Mela, 28 officials of the State government including 14 from the Food Safety department and 14 from the Public Health Laboratory will work in two shifts to ensure food safety for the devotees.

For this festival, the Food Safety department will deploy eight officials from outside Guwahati. We will check both raw materials and foodstuff and carry out laboratory tests on any item, if required. Moreover, open distribution of foodstuff is strictly restricted, and we have requested the police to take steps in connection with the matter, an official said.
