GUWAHATI, June 20 - The members of the Assamese community of Greater Mumbai have deeply mourned the death of Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath in Karbi Anglong district on the eveningof June 8 last. The members also strongly condemned the gruesome killing of both the youths on the suspicion that they were �child abductors�.
Braving torrential rain, the members of the Association met on June 17 at the Assam Bhawan, Mumbai to convey their condolences and expressed their views to improve peace and harmony in the State. Among the noted dignitaries present were film director and producer Padma Bhushan awardee Jahnu Barua, Joint Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, Devasish Sharma, singer Angarag (Papan) Mahanta, music composer Jatin Sharma, Dhrubajyoti Phukon, accomplished singer Anindita Paul, Joi Barua, Nilotpal Bora, percussionist Jonky Dutta, musician Kalyan Barua, Dibyajyoti Nath, Parasjyoti (Pappu) Das, film maker Reema Bora and many important members of the Assamese community of Greater Mumbai.
More than 20 speakers expressed their opinions so that such incidents do not recur in the future. The speakers lamented the lack of quality socio-political leadership resulting in the fragmentation of the Assamese society, intolerance among masses even among the educated people, failure of the Government machinery, role of the social media, deteriorating peace and harmony, superstition, the demography of Karbi Anglong district, unabated human trafficking, safety and security for tourists, role of the mainstream Assamese people, film makers, singers and the youth of the diverse ethnic groups of the State.
Binod Mudiar, president, The Assam Association read out a �Memorandum� which is being submitted to the State and Central Government. The members present signed the memorandum seeking immediate justice for the parents of both the youths. It also strongly urged the Assam Government to give immediate and severe punishment to the people involved both directly and indirectly in the heinous crime. The members further demanded strengthening of the intelligence agencies and adequate security cover in such vulnerable places so that such incidents do not recur in the future. The programme was ably conducted by Deepankar Borgohain, general secretary of The Assam Association, Mumbai.
