Mukul to be sworn in today

By Raju Das

SHILLONG, March 4 Chief Minister-designate Mukul Sangma would be sworn in here tomorrow at the Raj Bhavan.

Sangma returned here after consulting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at New Delhi. He had taken a list of Ministers and held discussions with her and decided to go it alone for now.

The Cabinet strength in the State is 12 and already there has been a scramble for Ministerial posts amongst the Congress legislators who now number 29.

However, in tomorrows swearing-in none of Sangmas Cabinet colleague would take the oath in an indication that there is more consultation that needs to be undertaken before the list is finalised.

The Nationalist Congress Party with two legislators and eight Independents are unlikely to get any Cabinet berths. However, Sanbor Shullai of NCP is likely to retain the Deputy Speakers post. NCP and the independents have extended unconditional support to the Congress.

Sources said that most of the Cabinet Ministers in the Meghalaya United Alliance Government are likely to retain their berths, which leaves four berths vacant, for which there is a beeline of Congress MLAs.

Working State Congress president Deborah Marak is likely to get a berth. So too is Sniawbhalang Dhar. Sangmas brother Zenith Sangma, sources said, MM Dangoo and Clement Marak are likely to get Cabinet berths. Clement Marak is likely to get a berth for defeating leader of the opposition Conrad Sangma from Selsella seat in Garo Hills.

Sources further said that AT Mondol is being asked to take the Speakers chair. He was Minister of Transport in the MUA Government.
