SHILLONG, March 13 - Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will contest from the Tura Parliamentary seat on the Congress ticket, while sitting party MP Vincent Pala will seek re-election from the Shillong seat in the forthcoming general election.
Congress spokesperson HM Shanpgpliang said the former Chief Minister has been given the ticket although his name was not on the list sent to the AICC by the State party unit. Pala, on the other hand, has been given the ticket for the third consecutive time and the �decision was unanimous�, he added.
Shangpliang said other names were forwarded by the State unit to the AICC, but the Congress leadership felt that Sangma was the ideal candidate to contest from Tura.
Sangma has contested the Tura seat unsuccessfully in the past. The constituency remains a stronghold of the PA Sangma family. Sangma is likely to contest against late PA Sangma�s youngest daughter, Agatha Sangma, who is also sister of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Agatha who won the Tura seat in the past was also a minister in the UPA Government at the Centre.
Pala, on the other hand, will lock horns with Meghalaya Democratic Alliance candidate Jemino Mawthoh. Both the seats are likely to have a direct fight, save the Independent candidates who may jump into the fray at the last moment.
