Mukul Sangma, 2 BJP candidates file nominations

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Feb 6 - Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma today filed his nomination for the Ampati seat and he would be filing his nominations for the Songsak seat tomorrow.

Sangma is seeking reelection from Ampati for a record sixth consecutive term. Sangma won the seat first in 1993 as an Independent candidate and in the following Assembly election in 1998 he joined the Congress.

This is for the first time in his political career that he would be contesting from two seats. Sangma is the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Congress and is fighting anti-incumbency and a resurgent NPP in the State.

Meanwhile, Sanbor Shullai and AL Hek of BJP today filed their nominations here today with both the candidates exuding confidence of retaining their seats.

Shullai would be seeking re-election for the South Shillong seat for the third consecutive term. Hek on the other hand would contest to retain the Pynthromukhrah seat for the fifth consecutive term. Both Shullai and Hek defected from the NCP and the Congress to join the BJP. The BJP expects that these two candidates would help in opening its tally in the coming elections.

During the 2013 elections the BJP drew a blank although it fielded candidates. However, this time the party expects at least 15-20 seats, Hek said.

The party has fielded 47 candidates out of the 60 seats. BJP national spokesperson and in-charge of Meghalaya, Nalin Kohli said, the party has put up candidates only in those seats where there is likelihood of winning.

We do not want to put up candidates as a tokenism, we fight credibly. A lot of survey (State-Central leaders) went into candidates selection, he said adding, that the performance of the party would surprise many.

He attacked the Congress for its corruption. We will not let the Congress from running away from their track record of what they have not delivered. Congress has a track record of unkept promises and corruption, Kohli said.

Shullai on the other hand said that Manas Chaudhuri who had quit the BJP and joined the Congress to fight the South Shillong seat would quit politics after the elections results are declared.

He sleeps through five years and wakes only during elections. I have defeated him in the last election and would again win by over 15,000 votes. He (Chaudhuri) would quit politics this time after election results are declared, Shullai said.

Apart from Shullai and Hek, Antonio War also filed his nomination from East Shillong seat and would be up against Congress heavyweight and Cabinet Minister, Ampareeen Lyngdoh.

Meanwhile, United Democratic Party candidate and sitting MLA from West Shillong Paul Lyngdoh also filed his nomination and accused the Congress government of diverting the attention of the public from its failure. Other UDP candidates also filed their nominations.

Earlier, during the day most of the candidates came with a massive entourage of supporters from their respective constituencies to the Deputy Commissioners office.
