Mukul invites President to inaugurate projects

SHILLONG, July 26 � Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma congratulated Pranab Mukherjee on being sworn-in as the 13th President of India and hoped that he would lead the country on the path of success and development.

Dr Sangma has invited Mukherjee to inaugurate major infrastructure projects sanctioned in the last two years.

Mukherjee, the UPA-backed candidate for the high post, on July 15 beat Bharatiya Janata Party-backed rival and former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma to the post.

Hailing Mukherjee as a scholar and able administrator, Mukul Sangma said, �The people are looking forward to gaining from his experience in serving the masses� Mukherjee is a visionary with vast knowledge on various issues, and that makes him the most qualified guardian of tenets of the Constitution of world�s largest democracy,� said Dr Sangma. In the Congress-ruled Meghalaya, Mukherjee got 34 votes to 23 for Sangma.

It is significant to note that work on Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road connecting the Baljek (Tura) airport has already begun. This project, worth Rs 1496 crore, is among the largest in the whole of Northeast.

Besides, the major infrastructure projects sanctioned for Meghalaya includes the four-laning of the Jorabat-Umiam Road, the Shillong Bypass and Garobadha-Ampati-Dalu Road. Another major project which will transform the socio-economic landscape of the region is the new National Highway (NH 127 B) connecting Srirampur, Dhubri, Phulbari, Tura, William Nagar and Nongstoin with a total length of 361 km including bridge over Brahmaputra connecting Dhubri with Phulbari which will be the longest new bridge in the country.
