Mukoli Bihu evokes huge response

GUWAHATI, April 16 � The Mukoli Bihu organized by the All Guwahati Students� Union (AGSU) at the Judges Field evoked a wide and spontaneous response from the public, on Wednesday, the day of Goru Bihu.

The festivities began at 11 am with eminent music director Ramen Baruah unfurling the Bihu flag and the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) president unfurling the AASU flag. It was followed by swahid tarpan offered by AASU general secretary Tapan Gogoi.

Several artistes and litterateurs of the State i.e. Arun Sarma, Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora, Jatindra Kumar Borgohain, Gobinda Narzary, Moinul Haque, Manju Bora, Rajen Bora, M Maniram Singh, Jayanta Kumar Goswami, Mridul Gupta, Zubeen Garg, Mirajur Rahman Barua, Sushanta Roy, Priyam Chaliha, Meernanda Barthakur, Nilotpal Gogoi, Padum Bodo and the family members of late Manoranjan Lahari were felicitated on the occasion for their contributions in their respective fields in art, culture and sports.

AASU advisor Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya also formally felicitated the guests.

At the end of the felicitation programme Zubeen Garg regaled the audience by rendering several popular Bihu songs. Other highlights of the day included several Bihu huchoris presented by troupes from different parts of the State, a bhortaal dance performed by 50 girls of Narahari Shilpi Samaj, and a fascinating Deori Bihu dance by a troupe from Lakhimpur, which held the audience spellbound.

Tributes were also paid to Natasurjya Phani Sarma on his birth centenary and actress Bina Das Manna who had passed away recently. Artiste Chetana Das recited dialogues from Bhogjara, the classic play by Phani Sarma and acted by Bina Das Manna.

The function culminated with the much popular community dance, where a galaxy of artistes � young and old alike � including Biju Phukan, Pranjal Saikia, Malaya Goswami, Purnima Pathak Saikia, Chetana Das, Somnath Bora, Khagen Gogoi, Ranjit Gogoi, Prasanna Gogoi, Jayanta Sonowal, Krishnamani Chutia, Vitali Das, Gayatri Mahanta, Nishita Goswami, Parinita Borthakur, Angarag Mahanta, Simanta Shekhar, Dikshu, Debojit Saha among others took part.
