GUWAHATI, June 25 - Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Dr Satyapal Singh called on Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan today and discussed issues pertaining to the Centres long-term vision of promoting the landscape of higher education in the State.

The discussion that lasted for about 20 minutes, centred round expansion of higher education. Taking a panoramic view of the educationally backward districts in the State, they discussed the issue of setting up colleges with the Central governments assistance in the State besides strengthening the technical institutions under the coordinated action plan for skill development.

Conveying the Centres keen interest in expanding higher education in the districts of Assam, Dr Singh called for a symbiotic approach between the Centre and the State for improving the quality of higher education and research in Assam.

Considering that Assam is located in an earthquake-prone area, the Governor requested the Union Minister to start schemes in the State under the National Programme of Earthquake Engineering Education.
