Mrigen Sarania new GMC Mayor

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 7 - The names of BJP councillors Mrigen Sarania and Bijuli Kalita Medhi were today unanimously accepted for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively, in the General Council of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

The council also accepted the resignation of former Mayor Abir Patra, who had resigned from his post on June 3, as his party the Congress became a minority in the council. It may be noted that after the Assembly election results, the BJP had claimed majority in the GMC, asking Patra to resign or face a no-confidence motion.

The GMC elections were held in 31 wards of Guwahati in June, 2013. Sarania represents Ward No 10, while Bijuli Kalita Medhi was elected as a councillor from Ward 23.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Sarania said that the post of Mayor is a big responsibility, especially with only two years in hand to complete the unfinished tasks. There is so much of work in hand, but at present the issue of urban floods would top my agenda. With the rainy season ahead, it would be more important to complete the de-siltation work well in time, to provide maximum relief to the people of Guwahati, he added.
