TURA, Jan 11 - About 200 Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) workers staged a protest outside the BJP office here in West Garo Hills, against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.
The demonstration that began this afternoon ended with the burning of the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah in front of the BJP office. The protest was led by MPYC president, Richard Marak along with senior Congress leaders and workers.
Terming the Bill as communally motivated humanitarianism the MPYC called it as an incentive for further migration into the North East.
The BJPs hypocrisy and dangerous politics is brought to the fore when one considers the provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the Assam Accord, and the NRC. The Bill negates both the Assam Accord and Section 6A, and thus makes redundant the entire exercise of updating the NRC, said Marak.
The MPYC termed the Bill as nothing more than vote bank politics and sought the ouster of the party from the NE. Unless we have a BJP free North East, BJP will finish us. Now is the right time, he added.
The MPYC president further hit out at Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma calling him voiceless against his political masters.
Meanwhile, NGOs in Garo Hills, including GSU, FKJGP, ADE and AYWO continued their protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2016, by observing a Black Flag Day across the region.
Black flag protests were held in Tura, Phulbari, Ampati, Williamnagar, Resubelpara and other places.
With the Bill being passed by the Lower House of Parliament and only awaiting approval by the Rajya Sabha, NGOs have promised to up the ante in their fight against the passage of the Bill.
