MPP stages sit-in against Manipur blockade

IMPHAL, Dec 2 - Manipur Peoples� Party (MPP) staged a sit-in demonstration against the ongoing economic blockade on National Highways in Manipur, here on Friday.

�We sit here to protest the ruling Congress Government�s inability to solve the problem arising out of the indefinite economic blockade on National Highways,� said MPP president N Sovakiran.

�We also condemn the Union Government for indirectly supporting the blockade and illegal tax collectors on Highways�, the MPP leader said.

Manipur has been suffering �untold miseries� as the United Naga Council sponsored indefinite economic blockade continues for more than a month now. As the government is unable to solve the current problem of the State, they should surrender, said a worker of MPP.

Meanwhile, more than 200 goods-laden trucks stranded at Mao Gate, bordering Nagaland border town Khuzama since the beginning of the blockade, were escorted to Imphal in the wee hours today, reports here said.

Earlier, around 500 goods-laden trucks including oil tankers were escorted from Jiribam despite opposition by blockade supporters at Noney area in Tamenglong district.

Workshop: The three-day International workshop on Eld�s deer conservation organised by Manipur Forest department and Wildlife Institute of India (WII) concluded here recently. The workshop was organised as part of the 10-day Manipur Sangai Festival.

The workshop has recommended the establishment of a second home for Sangai deer following the tenets of genetic management and ensuring active community participation for conservation of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) and the Sangai, ex-situ conservation through captive breeding after proper genetic analysis and ecological restoration of suitable sites, etc.

Five detailed country reports were also presented by the delegates from India, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
