MP urges Assam CM to recognize Manipuri language

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Sept 26 - Manipurs titular king, Leishemba Sanajaoba, who is also a Rajya Sabha member from the State, has urged Assam Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal to recognise Manipuri as an associate official language in Assam. I have made the appeal on behalf of the Manipuri people living in Assam, said Sanajaoba.

The Rajya Sabha member said, We would be able to protect the identity, history, culture and tradition of the Manipuris residing in Assam if Manipuri is recognised as an associate official language.

Moreover, the historic love, bond and the ties between the two States will be strengthened, he said. There are around 6 lakh Manipuri people living in Assam and the community has been pressing both the State governments to recognise the Manipuri language along with the other three languages, Assamese, Bengali and Bodo.

Meanwhile, speaking during the Zero Hour of the Lok Sabha on Sunday, Lok Sabha member RK Ranjan had drawn the attention of the House to recognize Manipur as an associate official language in Assam in compliance with Article 347.

Dr Ranjan also stated that the recent Bill passed by the Assam State Assembly for conducting Assam Public Service Commission examinations mentions only three languages Assamese, Bodo and Bengali. But the Manipuri language, which is included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, has not been recognized though Manipuri people have been residing in 13 districts of Assam right from the 15th century. About 104 Manipuri-medium schools have been recognised by the Government of Assam.
