MP for raising Mizoram Regiment

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Oct 16 - Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram Vanlalvena on Thursday called for formation of a Mizo Regiment under the Union Defence Ministry or a Mizo Rifles under the Union Home Ministry.

An official release stated today that the lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at his residence in New Delhi late on Thursday afternoon and discussed with him the prospects of formation of a Mizo Regiment or a Mizo Rifles.

Vanlalvena told Singh that Mizos are a courageous community. The British had engaged in a tough battle with the Mizos during the course of which a number of British officers and soldiers lost their lives. Two Mizo chiefs, Dokulha Chinzah and Ropuiliani, spent the rest of their lives in jail fighting the British government and not surrendering themselves till their last moments, Vanlalvena said.

He told Singh that it is of vital importance to guard the States long international border and that raising a Mizo Regiment or Mizoram Rifles is not only in the interest of the State to solve the unemployment problem, but more so for national security as the proposed regiment or paramilitary force can be deployed in these border areas.

Vanlalvena expressed optimism that the Mizo youth, with their inborn fighter spirit and strong desire to join the Indian Army and paramilitary force, can make up the best regiment or the best paramilitary force in the country.
