Move to prevent artificial floods

GUWAHATI, Aug 1 � To discuss the artificial flood in an around LGBI Airport and in surrounding areas and to mitigate that, a meeting was organised which was presided over by Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup metropolitan Ashutosh Agnihotri.

The meeting discussed about the short-term and long- term measures to mitigate the issue.

As short-term measures, the Army, Airport Authority, Water Resources Department, Public Works Department and the Circle Officer, Azara will jointly visit the affected areas tomorrow and the blockage will be cleared by the joint team immediately where ever required.

The meeting also decided to chalk out long-term plan to do away with the problem. As part of the long term measures, the Executive Engineer Palasbari-Gumi Water Resources Project Division and Airport Authority will jointly study the status of the problem and chalk out plan to prevent artificial flood and accordingly necessary steps would be taken up for long term solution, an official statement stated.

The meeting also discussed the unscientific blockage and construction made by the people as well as some construction groups. Due to blockage of natural drainage, the artificial flood created problems in and around the airport and its surrounding areas.

The district administration has decided to direct the regulatory authority like GMDA and the Panchayat not to issue any �NOC� for any filling up of low lying areas, drainage for facilitating construction under Disaster Management Act, 2005 under section 30 (v), (vi), (vii), (viii), (x), (xviii), (xx).

The meeting was also attended by Commanding Officer, Army Signal unit, Engineering wing officer, Director LGBI, Executive Engineer Palasbari-Gumi Water Resources Project, Mechanical Engineer of Water Resource, Assistant Executive Engineer, Guwahati Road and officers of district administration.
