Mother of newborn jumps to death in JMCH

JORHAT, Oct 16 - An incident of a mother of a newborn jumping from the third floor of the building housing the maternity ward of the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital in the wee hours today and thereafter dying has caused sensation.

Pinky Tanti, a mother of two daughters left behind a six-day old son in the ward. Pinky, wife of Akash Tanti, hails from Behora Tea Estate at Bokakhat of Golaghat district.

A JMCH sources have not ruled out post natal depression as one of the causes of the incident, but said that no such symptoms were seen on her on Tuesday. The source, quoting eyewitness, said Pinky had a quarrel with her husband Akash Tanti yesterday.

She was admitted to the JMCH on October 11, one day after the baby had been born due to low haemoglobin levels, the source said.

According to Akash Tanti�s narration of the incident to authorities, when he did not see Pinky in the bed in the wee hours, he searched for her and found her on the third floor of the building and as he tried to catch her she jumped from an open skylight above the stairway.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and is investigating the incident.
