Morigaon flood scene critical

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, June 13 The flood scene in Morigaon district turned critical on Friday after the dyke along the Brahmaputra at Muamari near Dhing was breached, inundating more than 40 villages and affecting around 35,000 people under the Lahorighat Revenue Circle.

Though Water Resources Department officials tried to protect the dyke, yet 40 per cent of the embankment was washed away by the floodwaters. At the Bhuragaon Revenue Circle, erosion is going on unabated at Kupatimari, threatening the riverine areas. At the Mayong Revenue Circle, about 60 villages were inundated by the floodwaters. Paddy crops on 2,000 hectares of land were completely damaged in the circle.

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary was also inundated by the floodwaters, forcing the wild animals, including the rhinos, to take shelter on the nearby highland. The Forest protection force is maintaining round-the-clock vigil to curb possible poaching in the flood-hit sanctuary.
