By Correspondent

SILCHAR, May 19 The All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA) remembered prominent mass leader and former minister Moinul Haque Choudhury on his 92nd birthday.

In a function organised here, speakers highlighted the life and works of the leader who is believed to be the architect of modern Barak Valley. Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, chief adviser of the student body, said Choudhury played a pivotal role in protecting the Barak river with his ideas on the construction of embankments.

Besides, the former Industry Minister of Assam was instrumental in the agro-industrial development of the region and it was because of him that the valley saw the establishment of the Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram and a sugar mill (now defunct) at Ratabari and also the National Institute of Technology at Silchar.

Veteran advocate Mojammil Ali Laskar hailed the selfless spirit that Choudhury possessed and said that he encouraged many around him with his enthusiasm. Former district judge Anwar Uddin Barlaskar said the illustrious career of Choudhury is a matter of great pride for everyone in the valley. He said Choudhury played a key role in disbanding the historic Language Movement of 1961 with the Shanti Parishad formed under his able leadership.

Other prominent persons, including Silchar District Congress president Arun Dutta Majumder, Kishore Bhattacharjee and Sadhan Purkayastha, also spoke on the occasion.
