GUWAHATI, March 10 � Modernisation of the police force is the top most priority of the State Government, said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi proposing steps to fill up all vacant posts of the State Police within the next financial year, including 6748 posts of armed branch constables, filling up of 340 unarmed branch sub inspectors� posts and 340 Assam Police Radio Organisation�s post.

To boost the morale of the security force personnel engaged in fighting the insurgents, he said that the ex-gratia grant to the next of kin of the security personnel, including Home Guards, killed in direct encounter has been raised to Rs 20 lakh. In the Government�s bid to strengthen the State Police, Gogoi proposed raise in the wages of Home Guards and steps to improve their service condition. He further proposed enhancement in the pocket money of the VDP personnel from Rs 500 to Rs 1500 per month.

The Chief Minister said in his Budget Speech that seven new border outposts/forest protection camps have been sanctioned for the inter-state borders with Nagaland, Meghalaya and Mizoram. Altogether 27 new border outposts/ forest protection camps are proposed to be established in the coming year.

The CCTV project in Guwahati will be completed within June this year, Gogoi said.
