By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 3 The Guwahati Planetarium is undergoing a massive modernization programme.

By mid-September, it is expected to run its shows with the use of the Hybrid Planetarium Projection, the first of its kind in the country. The process of modernization will need the Planetarium to be kept closed for visitors till end of November with effect from August 2, said its Curator Babul Bora in a statement here today.

The Hybrid Planetarium Projection system consists of digital all dome video as well as opto-mechanical projection systems with a digital sound system. The shows run with the use of this system will be much more attractive in comparison to the existing opto-mechanical projection system.

The first show with this system is expected to be launched after completion of the modernization programme by early December next. For the purpose, the show Cosmic Collision has been proposed. The show highlights formation of the universe and subsequently the Solar system and Earth, Moon, etc., Bora said.

Besides the above projection system, an astronomical gallery will also be set up in the Planetarium. This will include an array of several display objects and models on astronomy and space science with different types of telescopes etc.

A mobile planetarium will also be commissioned by the Planetarium for the benefit of the people of the remote corners of the State. Besides, sophisticated telescopes will be installed in the Planetarium for viewing the celestial objects and astronomical events by the students in particular and the people in general, Bora said.

The modernization programme is undertaken by the Science and Technology Department, Government of Assam. Japanese firm Goto Inc is installing the new projection system of the Planetarium, he said.
